Rep. Ilhan Omar is claiming her adult son was briefly detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents over the weekend, a story she quickly took to local media as the Trump administration ramps up immigration enforcement nationwide.
According to Omar, her son was pulled over by ICE agents after stopping at a Target store on Saturday. She told WCCO that her son, who she says was born in the United States, was released after producing his passport.

“Yesterday, after he made a stop at Target, he did get pulled over by ICE agents. Once he was able to produce his passport ID, they did let him go,” Omar said, according to NBC News. She also noted that her son carries his passport with him at all times.
The claim comes as President Donald Trump’s administration intensifies its crackdown on illegal immigration and criminal aliens. The Department of Homeland Security recently reported that more than 2.5 million illegal immigrants have left the country since Trump returned to office in January.
Omar’s comments arrive against a backdrop of growing controversy surrounding her family’s rhetoric on immigration enforcement. Her daughter, far-left activist Isra Hirsi, previously praised anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles and linked U.S. immigration enforcement to the war in Gaza, declaring, “From L.A. to Rafah, there is one common oppressor.”
That statement drew widespread backlash for appearing to glorify violence and equate American law enforcement with foreign conflicts.
