Driver With 100+ Arrests Charged in Death of Grammy-Nominated Musician

Patriot Brief

  • What Happened: Grammy-nominated musician Roderick Macleod was killed by a driver with more than 100 prior arrests.
  • Why It Matters: The suspect’s extensive criminal history raises major questions about repeat offenders walking free.
  • Bottom Line: A Rhode Island music legend is gone, and the justice system’s failures are again in the spotlight.

A celebrated Rhode Island musician is dead, and the suspect accused of killing him has a criminal record so extensive it reads like a policy indictment. Police say 70-year-old Roderick Macleod, a Grammy-nominated member of Roomful of Blues, was struck and killed while walking his dogs on December 6 in Hopkinton.

Authorities allege the driver, 41-year-old Shannon N. Godbout, veered out of her lane on Spring Street, slamming into multiple objects before hitting Macleod. He was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Godbout’s arrest shocked no one familiar with her history. Police say she had illegal narcotics and drug-packaging materials on her at the time of the crash. She now faces charges including driving to endanger resulting in death and possession of Schedule I/II narcotics with intent to distribute.

But her rap sheet tells the bigger story. According to Hopkinton Police, Godbout has been arrested more than 100 times, hit with at least 82 court warrants, and cited for 40 traffic offenses. She was already serving suspended sentences or probation on prior charges, yet remained free on the streets.

Godbout was taken to Westerly Hospital for evaluation and remains in police custody. The Rhode Island State Police Accident Reconstruction Team is assisting with the investigation, and additional charges may be coming.

Macleod leaves behind a legacy in the music world. His work with Roomful of Blues earned him a Grammy nomination in the 1980s, and he was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame in 2012.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Macleod’s family during this difficult time,” Hopkinton Police said.

The Attorney General’s Office will determine the full slate of charges at her upcoming arraignment.
