After Child’s Murder, Couple Allegedly Cashed Welfare Checks for Months

Patriot Brief

  • New charges filed: A Connecticut mother and her boyfriend now face fraud charges tied to SNAP benefits following a child homicide case.

  • Benefits continued after death: Investigators say food stamp benefits were collected months after the child had died.

  • Homicide ruled starvation: Medical examiners determined the child died from deadly abuse caused by starvation.

It is hard to imagine a case more disturbing than this, but somehow it keeps getting worse. A Connecticut mother already charged in the starvation death of her own child is now accused of exploiting the welfare system while her daughter was dead. While politicians insist government programs are compassion in action, this case exposes how easily they can be abused, even in the most horrific circumstances. Prosecutors say the same household that allegedly starved a child continued cashing taxpayer-funded benefits as if nothing had happened.

Gateway Pundit reports:

“According to a report from WFSB, Karla Garcia and her boyfriend, Jonatan Nanita, were charged in New Britain court with multiple fraud-related offenses connected to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

Garcia is the mother of Jacqueline ‘Mimi’ Torres-Garcia, whose death was ruled a homicide.

Department of Social Services investigators said Garcia had been receiving SNAP benefits for her household since October 2020.

Those benefits were still active at the time of Garcia’s arrest for her daughter’s murder.

Police later contacted DSS, which found Garcia had continued receiving benefits for Jacqueline and her four other children.

Investigators determined Jacqueline likely died in September 2024, months before SNAP renewal paperwork was submitted.

In January 2025, and again in August 2025, Garcia allegedly failed to report that Jacqueline was no longer part of the household, as she had died.”

This case is a grim reminder that systems built on blind trust can be manipulated in the most grotesque ways imaginable. While lawmakers argue for expanding benefits with fewer checks, real children are paying the price and taxpayers are footing the bill. Justice for this little girl now depends on a system that failed her when it mattered most.
